The Magic of Tea
Health Benefits of Tea
Studies have shown that tea has the following benefits:
(1)Anti-aging: catechins and vitamin P have anti-lipid peroxidation effects. Anti-aging effect comes from the synergy of vitamin C and P. Drinking tea also cuts down on the loss of vitamin C through excretion.
(2)Anti-cancer: oolong tea lowers the risk of cancer induction, while green tea has been shown to mediate the induction of lung cancer.
(3)Boosts the immune system: drinking oolong tea, flowering tea, and green tea strengthens your immune system.
(4)Prevents cardiovascular diseases: tea reinforces the resistance of capillaries (reducing brittleness), whereas oolong tea can lower your total cholesterol and blood viscosity.
Things to Look Out For When Drinking Tea
(1)People who have indigestion problems and those with gastric or duodenal ulcer should not drink strong tea to avoid discomfort from over-stimulation of the tea. However, they can drink weak tea on a full stomach after meals.
(2)Strong tea should not be taken on an empty stomach, especially those who are not regular tea drinkers. Strong tea in an empty stomach suppresses the secretion of gastric juice, so when drank in large quantity, symptoms of “tea intoxication” such as palpitations, nausea, stomach discomfort and low blood sugar may occur. If the symptoms come up, alleviate the discomfort by eating sweets or drinking sugar water.
(3)After taking medication, traditional Chinese or western medicine, tea drinking should wait until some time has passed. Tonic containing iron should not be taken with tea for the tonic to have its full effect.
(4)In hot weather when germs multiply in great numbers, tea should be stored and kept in proper ways to avoid exposure to air; otherwise the air may spoil the tea and make it undrinkable.
